Forskningen har haft svårt att finna belägg för att bistånd bidrar till en bättre välståndsutveckling i fattiga länder. Men kanske har biståndet minskat inkomstojämlikhet och fattigdom? En ny studie, ”Can Foreign Aid Reduce Income Inequality and Poverty?”, publicerad i Public Choice, finner följande:

[W]e find that aid by itself does not appear to have a statistically significant effect on inequality and poverty reduction. While both our simple cross-section approach and our dynamic panel estimation seem to suggest that good institutions may be necessary for aid to reach the poor, we fail to detect any robust impact of foreign aid in this regard, even when institutional quality is taken into consideration.
