Jag kan för övrigt varmt rekommendera hennes recept på gooey chocolate pudding samt notera att hon är dotter till Nigel Lawson, finansminister under Margaret Thatcher.

I The Picture of Dorian Gray formulerar Lord Henry Wotton följande om ungdomens primat:
Because you have the most marvellous youth, and youth is the one thing worth having. … Yes, Mr. Gray, the gods have been good to you. But what the gods give they quickly take away. You have only a few years in which to live really, perfectly, and fully. When your youth goes, your beauty will go with it, and then you will suddenly discover that there are no triumphs left for you, or have to content yourself with those mean triumphs that the memory of your past will make more bitter than defeats. … But we never get back our youth. The pulse of joy that beats in us at twenty becomes sluggish. Our limbs fail, our senses rot. We degenerate into hideous puppets, haunted by the memory of the passions of which we were too much afraid, and the exquisite temptations that we had not the courage to yield to. Youth! Youth! There is absolutely nothing in the world but youth!
Jag instämmer till fullo! Ålder och ”erfarenhet” är grovt överskattade, även i vår kultur. Det är i ungdomen som skönhet, livslust, fräschhet, nydanande och oräddhet återfinns. Trista åldringar som försöker imponera genom att berätta om allt de har gjort och vilka fina titlar de kan luta sig mot (ofta utan att ha gjort något av intresse sedan långt före titlarnas utdelande) har jag fått nog av. Den sprudlande 20-åringen däremot! Jag kan heller inte låta bli att se den gamla kroppen annat än som halvvägs på väg mot död och förruttnelse. I find it repulsive. Den unga kroppen däremot!
Att vara vacker ger, allt annat lika, högre lön. Detsamma tycks gälla även för längd. Långa personer tjänar, allt annat lika, mer än korta personer:
Persico et al. (2004) analyze the effects of height and find that especially teenage height exerts a positive influence on income later in life. For a given adult height, increasing height at age 16 by ten centimeters increased adult wages by an average of ten percent. Heineck (2005) finds no height premium for females or East German males but does find one for West German males: for them, each ten-centimeter increase in height gives rise to an average income increase of four percent (in the 175–195 centimeter range).
Uppdatering: Greg Mankiw och Matthew Weinzierl föreslår (förvisso mest som ett sätt att utmana den optimala beskattningsteorins normativa utgångspunkter) en ”längdskatt”. Om långa tjänar mer än korta för att de är långa är det inte mer än rätt att de betalar mer i skatt. Eller?

Jag läste en gång ett uttalande av Peter Jihde, apropå frågan vilken tjej som var snyggast i OS:
Jag passar. Jag tycker inte om utseendefixeringen och jag vill inte bidra till den. Utseende har inget med sport att göra.
Vad konstigt: jag tycker tvärtom. Det enda som är kul med sport är att kunna titta på snyggon.
Fotboll är t.ex. urtråkigt, men fotbollsspelare kan vara hur läckra som helst.
