George H. W. Bush har gått bort. Det fick mig att tänka på något Ekonomipristagaren James Buchanan skriver i sin essä ”The Soul of Classical Liberalism”:

George Bush, sometime during his presidency, derisively referred to “that vision thing” when someone sought to juxtapose his position with that of his predecessor, Ronald Reagan. He meant the “shining city on a hill,” the Puritan image that Reagan invoked to call attention to the American ideal; that image, and others like it, were foreign to Bush’s whole mind-set. He simply did not understand what Reagan meant and totally failed to appreciate why the image resonated so successfully in public attitudes. In a sense, we can say that Ronald Reagan was tapping into and expressing a part of the American soul beyond George Bush’s ken.

Medan Ronald Reagan hade förmågan att formulera en stark och emotionellt laddad politisk vision, var George Bush mer rationalistisk-teknokratisk och förstod sig inte riktigt på sin företrädares retorik. Buchanan menar att liberaler tenderar att vara som Bush, vilket i sin tur bidrar till att förklara varför inte fler sympatiserar med dem. Liberalismen, för att nå framgång, behöver enligt Buchanan en själ och en förmåga att förmedla något utöver det rationella och det vetenskapligt grundade. Jag tror att Buchanan har rätt – att nå politisk framgång kräver en vision och en förmåga att förmedla den – men innerst inne är jag mer som George Bush. (Vad är en själ?) Jag kommer att sakna honom.
