Jag bedriver, tillsammans med Henrik Jordahl och Panu Poutvaara, forskning om skönhetens betydelse för framgång i politiska val. Det har jag rapporterat om tidigare. Häromdagen såg jag en bok som fick mig att tappa hakan. Därpå fanns ett foto av Josef Stalin som ung. Oh mama! Kanske bidrar skönhet till politisk framgång även i diktaturer?

Men Stalin var inte bara vacker som ung utan även kristen. Bertrand Russell skriver följande i ”Religion and Morals”:

I do not believe that a decay of dogmatic belief can do anything but good. I admit at once that new systems of dogma, such as those of the Nazis and the Communists, are even worse than the old systems, but they could never have acquired a hold over men’s minds if orthodox dogmatic habits has not been instilled in youth. Stalin’s lanugage is full of reminiscences of the theological seminary in which he received his training. What the world needs is not dogma but an attitude of scientific inquiry combined with a belief that the torture of millions is not desirable, whether inflicted by Stalin or by a Deity imagined in the likeness of the believer. Att man är vacker gör en nog varken till kristen eller kommunist; men kanske bidrar skönhet till framgång även i ett kommunistiskt system (som trots allt består av människor). Och kanske bidrar, som Russell föreslår, en kristen, dogmatisk mentalitet till en öppenhet för kommunism och nazism.*
