I fråga om synen på moralens karaktär finns det realister, som ser den som objektiv, och subjektivister. Finns samma uppdelning på estetikens område? Finns det de som är estetiska realister, som anser att estetiska omdömen (t.ex. ”Mona Lisa är bra konst”) kan vara sanna eller falska, och de som är estetiska subjektivister? Ja, men bland ”vanligt folk” dominerar de senare, enligt den nya studien ”Can Folk Aesthetics Ground Aesthetic Realism?”:

In this paper, we discuss an argument that supports Aesthetic Realism by claiming, first, that common sense is realist about aesthetic judgments, because it considers that aesthetic judgments can be right or wrong, and second, that because Aesthetic Realism conserves ”folk aesthetics”, it is the best aesthetic theory available. We empirically evaluate this argument by probing whether ordinary people with no training whatsoever in the subtle debates of aesthetic philosophy consider their aesthetic judgments as right or wrong. Detta resultat underminerar alltså det argument som säger att eftersom människor är estetiska realister så är den estetiska realismen troligen sann. I vilket fall finns det givetvis också filosofisk argumentation för ett mer direkt avvisande av estetisk realism.
