Vad bestämmer prostituerades priser? I en studie av topprostituerade, s.k. eskorter, ”The Wages of Sin”, finner Lena Edlund, Joseph Engelberg och Christopher Parsons att de beror på ålder men också på den kostnad som prostitution innebär i termer av försämrade möjligheter på äktenskapsmarknaden. För detta kräver de prostituterade kompensation. Forskarna skriver:

Both the level and the shape of the wage profile are strongly suggestive of the marriage market being an important factor driving opportunity cost for prostitutes.

I figuren nedan visas överst timlönen för eskorter i olika åldrar. Notera toppen vid den ålder då de flesta gifter sig. Eskorter som inte har sex och transsexuella eskorter, som inte är aktuella för äktenskap, uppvisar inte någon sådan ”kompensationstopp”.

Det är för övrigt intressant att notera den höga timlönen, som mest ungefär 2 000 kr i timman. Edlund et al. skriver:

On average, escorts who provide sex command some $280/hour, a wage rate that on a full time basis would place them in the top 0.5 percentile of the US earnings distribution, or roughly in the top 0.05 percentile of the female earnings distribution [Kopczuk et al., 2008, table 12B]. Most likely, escorts do not work 2,000 hours per year, but a mere 20% employment would suffice to secure a position in the top quintile of the U.S. household income distribution (an income roughly at par with that of the median household whose head holds a Master’s degree).

Det förefaller orimligt att se alla prostituerade som värnlösa offer.
