Michel Foucault beskriver en mycket fascinerande företeelse från antikens Grekland: hupomnemata [gr. υπομνηματα]! Med detta avses förandet av anteckningar i syfte att utveckla och styra sig själv. Foucault förklarar:

In this period, there was a cultivation of what might be called ”personal writing”: taking notes on the reading, conversations, and reflections that one hears or has or does; keeping notebooks of one sort or another (what the Greeks called hupomnemata), which must be reread from time to time in order to reactualize what they contain.*

Och han utvecklar:

One wrote down quotes in them, extracts from books, examples, and actions that one had witnessed or read about, reflections or reasonings that one had heard or that had come to mind. They constituted a material record of things read, heard, or thought, thus offering them up as a kind of accumulated treasure for subsequent rereading and meditation. … [T]he intent is not to pursue the unspeakable, nor to reveal the hidden, nor to say the unsaid, but on the contrary to capture the already-said, to collect what one has managed to hear or read, and for a purpose that is nothing less than the shaping of oneself.**

Jag tilltalas mycket av tanken att man inte är färdigtänkt, att det man har tagit del av behöver analyseras vidare, att man aktivit kan forma sig själv — och att det finns praktiska metoder för detta. För egen del köpte jag för ett tag sedan en Moleskine-bok i vilken jag kontinuerligt skriver ned tankar, idéer, reflektioner och citat, för att kunna återvända till dem och fundera vidare på dem. Jag finner detta intellektuellt stärkande. Men jag ser även bloggandet som en modern form av hupomnemata. Det är ett sätt för mig att teckna ned forskningsresultat, tankar, insikter och estetiska upplevelser som jag tror har möjlighet att utveckla mitt eget (och förhoppningsvis andras) mentala liv. Att ta del av andras tänkande och stöd var för övrigt något Seneca rekommenderade:

[I]t is necessary to train oneself all one’s life, and one always need the help of others in the soul’s labor upon itself.***
