Turkiet bör också få komma in på sikt. Skälet anges av F. A. Hayek:

Planning, or central direction of economic acticity, presupposes the existence of common ideals and common values; and the degree to which planning can be carried is limited to the extent to which agreement on such a common scale of values can be obtained or enforced. It is clear that such agreement will be limited in inverse proportion to the homogeneity and similarity of outlook and tradition possessed by the inhabitants of an area. Although, in the national state, the submission of the will of the majority will be facilitated by the myth of nationality, it must be clear that people will be reluctant to submit to any interference in their daily affairs when the majority which directs the government is composed of people of different nationalities and different traditions.*

Dvs. om man eftersträvar ett EU som inte agerar i särskilt många frågor och inte tar över alltmer av nationernas sysslor, tror jag att många medlemmar med olika värderingar och bakgrunder är bra, som ett slags tröghetsmekanism. Rent allmänt visar resonemanget på att fenomen som brukar framhållas som otvetydigt positiva, som en vilja till samarbete och tillit mellan människor, också kan ha en negativ sida: tycker alla lika finns det ofta ingen som säger stopp och belägg.
